"MORE THAN 3133 OIL SPILLS HAVE BEEN THREATENING ECOSYSTEMS IN COLOMBIA IN THE LAST 3 YEARS"

Every year, more than 1,000 significant land-based oil spills occur each year in Colombia, contaminating millions of hectares of soil, destroying habitats and threatening countless species. Devastating the world we live in, the nature we love to explore.

LIVING FABRIC
Developed at the University of the Andes, Living Fabric is a biodegradable textile made from fique fibres and inoculated with Lysinibacillus sphaericus to clean oil-contaminated land environments through bioremediation.

OIL EATING BACTERIA
An open source investigation
Meet Lysinibacillus sphaericus, an extraordinary bacterium with the ability to degrade contaminating compounds like hydrocarbons from oil-polluted soil. It breaks the molecular bonds in these pollutants to generate carbon and energy for building cellular material. Our investigation into this process is fully transparent and open for anyone to explore, encouraging shared learning and collaboration in environmental remediation.
We designed a portable, lightweight, and 100% biodegradable packaging to store 33m² of Living Fabric in each box, enabling anyone to cover extensive areas of oil spills, even in the most hard-to-reach terrains.
